The Cireșarii (Ro: Cherry Gang) Almonds: what does this name hide?
Share
"Sooo, aren't you afraid that people won't understand what products you grow here? What is it, almonds or cherries?🤔"
It's true that the name of the orchard evokes such reactions, and it's also true that we have a few cherry trees in the orchard, not many, about 100 (😉). But that's not why we gave the orchard this name.
We generally like to experiment, and the cherries in the orchard are part of such an experiment. We wanted to see if the May cherries, the ones that bear fruit the earliest, are planted in our orchard and if they actually bear fruit in May. Spoiler alert: they are planted but they don't really bear fruit (the reason in another post). Does this idea of bringing some products to the market earlier to have a super good margin sound good? But no, the presence of the cherries in the orchard is not the reason for the name chosen to represent it.
If you are part of our generation, born sometime in the 70s, you probably already suspect the answer. And you are among the many (former) children and teenagers of those years who read one or more of the novels "Cireșarii" written by Constantin Chiriță. Even today, I find the titles given to the novels of the series absolutely fascinating: "The Knights of the Cherry Blossom", "The Castle of the Girl in White" or "Aripi de znaăbu"….✨✨. All of us who read these novels during our adolescence found ourselves among those cherry trees and dreamed of their adventures. I was Lucia, the girl with short hair, boyish, smart and brave, with a scholar's soul. Through these characters we could escape from our simple lives, from poverty, from deprivation. The cherry pickers didn't stand in lines for milk and weren't forced by school to go to work in the fields, they were a cool bunch, they went on trips, made expeditions in the mountains, had real adventures and lived the joy of adolescence. My adventures happened at the same time as the cherry pickers, on the floor of my city library, reading.
The Cireșarii Almonds Orchard is our greatest adventure in the middle of unspoiled nature. Just as Victor found ingenious solutions and Lucia put her sharp mind to work, so too here, in the middle of the almond trees, we live that spirit of exploration and innovation. We started this adventure without any experience in agriculture, without any financial support, without consultants, without European projects, without bank loans. Two Bucharesters, an idealistic capital market trader and a corporate woman, naive explorers in the great adventure of discovery organic farming and almond culture in Romania 😅 . For us, the orchard is an experiment and a chance to rewrite our own stories, through which we want to demonstrate that through enthusiasm, courage and creativity we can develop exceptional products right here, in the country.
Besides that, we're also a little amused by the thought that, upon hearing the name of the orchard, you can be left a little confused and with a question hanging in your mind... So, almonds or cherries? 😉
